North Bend Central turned to a one-man wrecking crew to route Wayne's Bluedevils, 42-29, in a nonconference football game last Friday [Oct. 2, 1987] on the road.

Tiger halfback Scott Roucka had one of those you-dream-about performances, scoring six touchdowns to nearly singlehandedly destroy Wayne.

In the first quarter Wayne drew first blood, scoring on a five-yard run by Willy Gross. Doug Larson added the PAT kick and the Bluedevils were on top, 7-0.

The Tigers came right back with a patented drive of their own. Roucka capped the effort with a three-yard run for the touchdown. Mike Hampl picked up the PAT on a run to give NBC an 8-7 lead.

Roucka scored again in the second quarter, this time on an 18-yard run. Later, NBC scored again as quarterback Jeff Woita hooked up with Roucka on a 60-yard pass-run play.

Meanwhile, the Bluedevils got on the scoreboard for a second time when Jess Zeiss fired a 48-yard TD pass to Elliot Palm. The PAT kick was good and, as the quarter ended, the Tigers led 20-14.

The turning point in the contest came when the Tigers stuck the Bluedevils with 22 unanswered points in the third quarter. Roucka ran at will, scoring three touchdowns on runs of 4, 3 and 32 yards. Hampl added one PAT on a run while Woita annexed another on a run

As the team headed into the fourth quarter, NBC found itself in an unfamiliar position this fall, leading 42-14.

Wayne salvaged a bit of respect in the final quarter, scoring twice on a pair of runs by Eric Liske from the three- and one-yard line. A two-point PAT by Gross and a PAT kick rounded out a 42-29 NBC victory.

"A lot of people deserve credit: the offensive line, the defensive; it was a real good effort by everyone," said Coach Jim Savio.

In that first victory of the season was a new school record set by Roucka for most points scored by an individual in a game (36). The old mark was 24.

Individual stats credited Roucka with 160 yards on 21 carries as the Tigers ground out 236 total yards. Wayne had 219 yards on the ground.

NBC's passing game clicked for 159 yards as Woita went 6-9. Top receivers were Roucka 3-67 yards, Hampl 2-49 yards, and Bob Emanuel 1-43 yards.

Defensively, the top tackle performance came from Jeff Emanuel, 5 unassisted and 8 assisted, Roucka 2-6, Danny Dubbs 4-4 and Jeremy Van Ampting 2-3.

This week NBC will host Lyons-Decatur Northeast on Friday with kickoff time slated for 7:30 p.m. The Tigers will enter the conference clash with a 1-4 record.
