More changes coming to highway crossingby Mary Le Arneal The intersection of Platte River Road and Highway 79 in downtown North Bend will become a four-way stop starting next week. When the Nebraska Department of Transportation first starting talking about what would happen to the “old” Highway 30 and Highway 79 intersection, the plan was to have one-way traffic stop. According to Barbara Gerbino-Bevins, the District 2 NDOT Construction Engineer, NDOT was planning on swapping the stop movements, to stop traffic on Platte River Road and let Highway 79 traffic go without stopping. “That plan has changed, Gerbino-Bevins said. “Now, the plan is to just make this intersection a four-way stop for the foreseeable future.” The new stop signs are scheduled to be put in place Oct. 10. NDOT will continue to monitor this intersection to see if additional changes are needed. The present blinking light will remain with blinking red lights facing all four directions. Before the changes were decided upon, traffic counts were taken at this intersection last winter. Gerbino-Bevins said NDOT determined a four-way stop would better fit the current situation. Recent research also suggests four-way stops may reduce crashes better than two-way stop signs. The concrete medium, or thumb, sticking out of the northeast corner of the intersection near the old Corner Cafe will remain in place, Gerbino-Bevins said. “During the design process prior to construction, city officials and businesses had indicated vehicles parked in the south-most parking stall in front of the Corner Cafe would often be damaged by turning semi-trailers,” Gerbino-Bevins said. “The purpose of this concrete median is to keep traffic from cutting too close to this corner when turning in the hope of preventing further damage to parked vehicles.”
