High winds and icy roads contributed to an accident involving Katie Balerud, a second-year special ed teacher at NBC elementary school, her boyfriend Mike Hansen and his dad Jeff Sunday night.

The trio was in a pickup towing an empty cattle trailer on their way home from a cattle sale in West Point when the wind caught the trailer and blew them across the highway near Wisner, into the path of an oncoming car. The car hit the passenger side of the pickup.

Balerud, 24, suffered fractures in her neck, back and pelvis, according to her father, Pete Balerud. She was scheduled for surgery Tuesday afternoon at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She does have normal movement and feeling in all her limbs.

Mike Hansen escaped relatively unharmed, while Jeff Hansen has a couple of cracked ribs and a concussion.
