During its regular board meeting on Oct. 12, the North Bend Central Board of Education voted unanimously to no longer allow students to operate electric bicycles on school grounds. This comes after months of consideration by the board to adopt such policy following several incidents across the state involving e-bikes.

While the new policy adopted by the board only covers the operation of e-bikes on school campus, it does not ban it as a method of traveling to the school. However, once a student arrives on campus, the new policy states that students must dismount and walk their e-bikes to the designated parking area. Students will also have to walk them until they are off of school grounds.

It was also stressed in the policy that operation of e-bikes, e-scooters and other electric or motorized vehicles are never permitted in the arboretum or on the arboretum trail.

Superintendent Patrick Ningen said the new policy is in place to keep students safe.

“Safety on our school grounds is very important to us,” he said. “We feel creating a policy and expectation for personal electronic vehicles on campus allows us to maintain that safety and get ahead of possible future legislation.”
