Two viles show before (left) and after ice pigging cleaned out water mains. North Bend will be undergoing the process later in June.

There have been complaints about the water in North Bend, and the city has found something they think will help.

Councilman Chuck Krenzer, chair of the Utility Department, visited Valley recently too observe the ice pigging process as that towns mains were cleaned.

Ice pigging is a less invasive process to remove sediment from the water mains. This is done by running an semi-frozen ice slurry through the water mains. The slush picks up and pushes out debris within the pipes.

This process is completely safe, meeting all EPA regulations. The City of North Bend will be ice pigging during the week of June 23 to June 27. The city will be broken up in sections with one section pigged at a time. The schedule of sections will be announced before the process begins.

During this process there will be temporary disruption of service. Residents are cautioned not to use their water while their section is being cleaned, as using water during the ice pigging will introduce the sediment into your system. Shut off automated sprinklers and any other sources that will automatically draw the water into your house.

Do not do laundry or run dish washers when your section is being done.

When the team gets the sections figured out and sets the schedule, that information will be sent out by TextMyGov.

Not all of North Bend will undergo pigging. Newer sections of town or sections with PVC lines will not need it. Those with older homes and older pipe lines will be flushed with the ice slurry.

Residents will be notified when their house will be included in this process. To receive notification, residents should sign up for TextMyGov, which is a very simple process. Text the number 91896 and put NORTH BEND in the message box if you are not already receiving texts from the city.
