Street work moving to Segment 4, downtownby Nathan Arneal Work on reconstructing North Bend’s Main Street continues to crawl along, but there will be some major signs of progress noticeable this week. The Nebraska Department of Transportation informed the City of North Bend on Friday that work will be starting downtown on Wednesday, Aug. 23. At that time workers will start to tear out and remove the existing Main Street between Eighth and Sixth streets. At the same time that work begins, Main Street north of Eighth Street will be reopened to local traffic. East-west street crossings will be open at Eighth, 11th and 14th streets. The remaining cross-street intersections will be opened as they are ready. NDOT project manger Ray Trujillo emphasized that Main Street north of Eighth Street will be open to local traffic only. Through traffic is still expected to follow the detour to the west. Main Street businesses are expected to have front-door access during the work, with the exception of when work is being performed directly in front of their door. An NDOT representative said any gaps in sidewalks will be covered or filled in with temporary material to allow pedestrians to reach each business. Trujillo said each impacted business will be notified by the contractor. UPDATE: Hours after this story went to print, contractor Steve Harris Construction delivered letters to the downtown businesses late Tuesday morning. In that letter the start date for downtown construction was moved back to Monday, Aug.28.
