Board considers CIP for large purchases

At its Aug. 14 meeting the North Bend Central Board of Education discussed the Capital Improvement Plan, CIP, looking at major purchases for the next 10 years. NBC pole vault coach Katie Wright spoke about the need to replace the pole vault mats and pit. What is now being used is 14 years old, showing wear and tear and not protecting students as it is supposed to. Wright said that new ones are made such that mats would not have to be turned according to the direction the runners were coming from when wind changes. They cost around $38,000.

Dance sponsor Randi Mimick addressed the board about the NBC dance team attending United Dance Association National Competition in Florida in February. There are 10 dancers who have expressed interest in going and have qualified to compete in the national event. Each girl would need to raise $2,000, which caused some concern for board members. Approval passed 4-2 with Doug Hoops and Justin Taylor voting no.

The implementation of baseball as a school sport was tabled once again as requested information about cost, other schools in conference participating, transportation requirements and number of boys interested has not been gathered.

Principal Brenda Petersen reported that the new football scoreboard has been installed and a number of students and teachers have been trained to operate the digital board. It was noted that heating and cooling in the press box would be needed to maintain the digital board equipment. Some can be brought inside during the winter, but other equipment is too cumbersome to transport into the school building.
Plans for the first day of school were discussed. The high school theme for the year is "A New Era at NBC" with special activities planned. The elementary school held an open house Aug. 16.

A Media Day was held at NBC with all fall sports teams having a designated time to have team and individual photos taken as well as video clips for the new scoreboard.

Lawmakers have pushed all computer science graduation requirements back a year. Students graduating in 2028 will be required to take a 5-credit computer science course.

In other business the board:
• approved the student fees handbook.
• approved board policy manual with updates recommend.
• approved Hudl invoice, the second of a three-year contract.
• accepted resignation of Kory Bourek and hired Gabrielle Schwanebek as technology assistant.
• accepted the resignation of Kris Sharp and hiring of Jenna Woehl as MS/HS paraeducator.

The board will hold a retreat Aug. 23 at the public library, have a financial planning meeting Aug. 28 at the high school and hold its regular board meeting Sept. 11. All meetings are at 7:30 p.m.
