Calling clinics prep for state contestby Nathan Arneal If you see a number of ducks roosting on the peak of the city auditorium Monday night next month, there’s a reason for that.
classes will be setting the table for the state duck calling contest, which the Grand Passage is hosting at the North Bend City Auditorium June 17. (Ed. note: This is a correction from the print article which incorrectly said the contest was June 19) The winner of the state contest received a prize of $500 and will advance to the world championships in Stuggart, Arkansas, Thanksgiving weekend. In addition to the state contest, two novice divisions – one for kids 16 and younger and one for adults – will be held for callers learning the craft with their own cash prizes. A state duck calling contest used to be a regular event, but it has not been held in recent years. A group of Grand Passage members have been active in duck calling contests and thought it was an opportunity for the club. “With our mission with the Grand Passage to get more youth involved,” contest chairman Nick Emanuel said, “if we’re going to do the work of hosting this state contest, we needed a commitment to do the youth calling clinics.” Two members of the Grand Passage are well versed in the duck calling world. Jesse Headid of Cedar Bluffs and Nick Brichacek of Schuyler have each won multiple state calling contests and competed in the world championships. Brichacek finished seventh in the world last year. Those two will be teaching the clinics in North Bend on May 1, May 15, May 30 and June 12. The class is free to youth 17 and younger and open to adults for $40.
