Board votes to approve scoreboards with conditionsby Mary Le Arneal The North Bend Central Board of Education had a long discussion with North Bend Booster Club president Rich Samuelson and member David Hild about updating the scoreboards at the football, softball fields and in Tiger Arena. Samuelson said that $280,500 has been committed from community sponsors, and it is expected to raise at least $315,065 from advertising and donations. It was requested that the board commit $185,000 toward the project. It was brought up that the digital boards would benefit school, coaches and students. There is a curriculum package where students would create content to be displayed on the board. The Booster Club is applying for grants to have teachers learn about this curriculum. “People want to make an investment in the district with their sponsorship,” Samuelson said. “Individuals will have the opportunity to donate through the Fremont Area Community Foundation Big Give on May 9.” Samuelson said there is an urgency to get the funds raised so that the new boards will be in place for fall sports, as 18 weeks are needed for installation. Thirty percent of the payment must accompany order, 60% is due before shipment and 10% when the project is complete. Board member Francis Emanuel moved that the purchase be approved as long as the school lawyers approve the contract and the bidding process is not required. Justin Taylor seconded the motion and it was passed 6-0. There will be a special meeting of the board April 21, 8 a.m., to give final approval of this project. Prior to the meeting board members walked through the district facilities and noted items that needed attention. At the elementary school there was concrete to be repaired or replaced and other flooring items that needed attention. At the high school it was noted that the family consumer science room needs updating, some classrooms needed new carpet, the track needed painting and the pole vault mats needed to be replaced, signs and fencing needed to be replaced and painting the restroom building was needed. Teachers Aaron Sterup and Randi Mimick spoke to the board about a teacher evaluation tool that the teachers and principals have been working on. A certified administrator will observe and evaluate each probationary certified employee for a full instructional period each semester and each permanent certified employee for a full instructional period once every three years, unless concern arise during the school year. NBC sophomore Akryn Bourek appeared before the board to request that he be able to graduate after his junior year. He plans to attend Iowa State University to study aerospace engineering. He has contacted the university and they said as long as he meets graduation requirements he can start there after his junior year. He will double up on math, science and English classes to get the recommended 220 credit hours and required classes to graduate in 2024. After some discussion, the board approve a waiver for Akryn, rather than changing their policy of attending seven semesters of high school to graduate. Boldt reported that the food services have been restructured for the next school year. Angela Tauber has been hired to do the budget and ordering. Jamie Brodd at the high school and Amanda Vyhlidal at the elementary school will represent their respective areas. There will not be a food service director but the staffing will be up to what it has been. In other news the board:
