Baums away: 3-point record fallsby Nathan Arneal With a flick of the wrist against Malcolm on Feb. 10, Kelly Baumert wrote her name in the NBC girls basketball record book.
The senior guard ended the 2008-2009 season with 35 three-pointers, more than any other player in school history. Coach Aaron Sterup said the threat of Baumert’s outside shooting gave a needed boost to the Tiger offense. “When we had trouble scoring because of our lack of size, those outside shots really helped us get some confidence in some big games,” Sterup said. “She gave the opposing team someone on the outside to worry about which left more scoring opportunities for others.” Baumert tied Sara Bloom’s single season record of 30 against Tekamah-Herman in the East Husker tournament final, then made the record her own in the second quarter against Malcolm. Earlier in the season she tied the single-game school record for three-point shooting percentage after making 3-of-4 three’s against Schuyler. Her 125 three-point attempts this season are also believed to be a school record. “Kelly was definitely a very important part of our success this year in many ways,” Sterup said, “with her shooting being a big part of that.” <<Back to the NBC girls basketball school records
