Autumn Bourek may have lost her building, supplies and equipment in the fire that ravaged downtown North Bend last December, but she did not lose her business or her spirit.

Bourek was able to maintain her business, thanks to the kindness of Carry Gerke, owner of Shear Design Salon, who rented her a chair so Bourek could keep serving her customers.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to repay her,” Bourek said of Gerke’s generosity. “I was able to continue my business and I gained two friendships.”

Bourek purchased the building at 615 Main St. Her husband Andy and father-in-law Raymond Bourek of Howells and other family members completely remodeled the inside of the former exercise gym.

“They did everything except the electrical and heating and air,” Bourek said. “We are so thankful for their support.”

Bourek and new stylist Kristen Moser opened up their saloon on Monday. They plan to hold an open house Nov. 4 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The open house will feature different service and retail representatives demonstrating their hair, skin and tanning products. There will be food, samples and a drawing for gift baskets. Those booking an appointment will get a chance to win a flat screen TV.

Moser is new to the area, having married North Bend native Tony Moser this summer. She has three years salon experience in the Lincoln area.

In the new salon Bourek and Moser offer hair cuts and color, texturing services, hair removal services, cosmetic, manicures, pedicures and tanning.

“The salon looks amazing and we are very excited to show all of our clients around,” Bourek said. “We did a lot of soul searching after the fire, and I realized how much I love my career. We definitely realized this past year what an amazing community we belong to. We are proud to be a part of this community.”
