With four teams fighting right up to the end of the 2007-08 high school sports season, it is Wisner-Pilger who lands the 2008 East Husker Conference all-sports championship.

The all-sports standings were compiled by the North Bend Eagle after awarding points based on how each school finished in the six girls sports and six boys sports.

The Gators, who picked up championships in volleyball, boys cross country and track, as well as boys basketball and the boys basketball tournament, edged out West Point-Beemer by one point. North Bend and Oakland-Craig also finished within three points of the boys and girls combined all-sports championship.

On the strength of EHC titles in basketball and cross country, Oakland-Craig won the all-sports championship on the girls side. For the boys, West Point-Beemer finished first in the football ratings and picked up EHC silver in cross country, basketball, track and golf to vault the Cadets to the top of the conference.

How it was scored

Points were awarded in each sport based on regular season standings and the number of teams that participated in the sport. So if all 10 teams competed in a sport, the conference champion received 10 points, second place nine points, third place got eight, and so on. If there were only seven teams in a sport, the winner got seven points, the runner-up six, and so on.

Basketball, volleyball: Regular season East Husker Conference standings were used.

Wrestling, cross country, golf, track and field: Points were awarded based on the school’s finish at the conference meet. In cross country and golf, only full teams counted in the team standings.

Football: With the advent of district play and statewide scheduling several years ago, conference play in football went out the window. Points were awarded based upon the Eagle’s final East Husker Conference ratings. These ratings, published Nov. 28, were compiled after considering each team’s record, head-to-head match ups against other EHC teams, common opponents, and strength of schedule.
West Point-Beemer was crowned as the mythical conference champion after going 8-3 and advancing to the Class C-1 state quarterfinals.

Softball: With only four conference teams competing in softball, the East Husker does not officially recognize the sport or hold a conference championship. However, the four teams, North Bend-Scribner-Snyder, Tekamah-Herman, Logan View and Wisner-Pilger, all play each other, so the Eagle was able to compile regular season standings based on those games. Only single, regular season games were counted. As in other sports, tournament games or other multi-team formats were not included in the standings.

The unofficial 2007 conference softball standings looked like this: 1. North Bend-Scribner-Snyder (3-0), 2. Tekamah-Herman (2-1), 3. Logan View (1-2), 4. Wisner-Pilger (0-3). North Bend and Scribner-Snyder, who co-op in softball, were awarded the same number of points.

Tournaments: Top-four finishes in the conference tournaments were also recognized. Teams were awarded four points for winning a conference tournament, three points for runner-up, two points for third and one point for fourth place. These bonus points were awarded for the conference volleyball and basketball tournaments and the conference wrestling dual tournament.
