The North Bend Central girls basketball team picked up its second win of the year with a 53-23 defeat of Schuyler last Tuesday (Dec. 9, 2008).

The Tiger defense showed flashes of brilliance in surrendering just four points in the second quarter and registering a shutout in the fourth.

Coach Aaron Sterup was pleased with the defensive effort for the most part, but he said several defensive lapses showed cause for concern. NBC held the Warriors scoreless for most of the third period, but gave up several layups toward the end of the quarter.

“We pride ourselves on not giving up easy baskets,” Sterup said. “(The Schuyler run to end the third) showed we have quite a few girls who don’t understand what it takes to play great defense yet. Hopefully, we will learn from it and use it as a positive.”

Meri Gross-Rhode keyed the Tiger offense with 15 points and two assists. Samantha Renter had 12 points and Kelly Baumert had nine while making 3-of-4 three-pointers. Baumert shot 60 percent from three-point land during the team’s first two games of the season.

“(Baumert) is certainly important for our offense,” Sterup said. “With our size, we must have someone who can score outside, and she has done that well so far.”

Baumert was also NBC’s top assist maker with four. Stephanie Settles led North Bend with seven rebounds while Renter and Gross-Rhode grabbed six each.
