Boys, Cash headed to state

Cash smilesKelsey Cash was all smiles when it was her turn to collect her district medal.

NBC cross country coach Dan Watts said he was hoping his boys team could fight for one of the top three spots to earn a team qualification for state, but his team made him a better offer. Jesse Lacey ran a personal best time of 16:58 to place third. Then when Eric Kloke and Kyle Krula crossed the finish line in 13th and 14th place to pick up their own medals, the Tigers started having visions of gold. When Kyle Greenwood finished just a few spots behind Krula and Kloke, the first thing he breathlessly told his teammates was "We got it."

They did indeed as NBC claimed the district championship and will be headed for state Friday, Oct. 24. Kelsey Cash placed ninth in the girls race to claim her own ticket to state.

Lacey top EHC runner

Jesse Lacey became the first North Bend runner to win an East Husker Conference championship in cross country since Mark Richardson in 2000 when he won the title Thursday, Oct. 9, at Logan View. Lacey’s time of 17:30 was also a personal best for a 5000 meter course and put him 23 seconds in front of the runner-up. The NBC boys placed fourth in the team standings.

Kelsey Cash placed sixth in a time of 16:47.7 to lead the charge for the Tiger girls, who finished fifth as a team. The NBC harriers will compete at the D-1 district meet Thursday in Tecumseh.

Times fall on short Boys Town course

Nearly everyone cut a considerable amount of time off his or her personal best at the Boys Town Invite Oct. 2, including Jesse Lacey's seventh place time of 17:01.4. Coach Dan Watts said the course was shorter than regulation, estimating that everyone ran about a minute faster that what they would have run on a regulation course.

The NBC boys finished last among the eight, mostly Class B schools, just a few points behind host Boys Town. Kelsey Cash finished just outside the medals in 18th place for the Tiger girls. The NBC girls placed ninth.

NBC previews state meet course

Jesse Lacey returned to the course he ran on at last year’s state meet and showed signs that he may be a factor the next time he runs on the Kearney course. The sophomore ran a personal best time of 18:14 at last Monday’s UNK Invite, a time that placed him sixth among the field of 135 runners. Sophomores Kyle Krula and Eric Kloke and senior Kyle Greenwood all finished in the 40’s, putting NBC in ninth place out of 17 teams.

Kelsey Cash led the Tiger girls with a 20th place finish, and her time of 17:33 cut 30 seconds off her personal best. Shelby Peitzmeier ran second for North Bend, coming in at 74th place. Watts said she is cutting about three minutes off her 2007 times each meet she runs.

The North Bend cross country boys placed third in Division II at the North Bend Invite Thursday. Sophomore Jesse Lacey led the Tigers boys with a fourth place finish. The NBC girls checked in at fifth on the home course and were led by Kelsey Cash's eighth place finish.

Tigers struggle at Bennington

The NBC boys finished eighth out of nine full teams at the Bennington Invite Thursday, Sept. 18. Jesse Lacey was the top Tiger finished with a fourth place finish. Next in line for NBC was Eric Kloke in 36th. Coach Dan Watts said he is looking for a better finish from his runners.

"I wouldn't say this was a great outing," Watts said. "I thought our 2-3-4 runners would be closer to Jesse. This is our crucial task we must accomplish to have a decent team score. If any one of the 2-3-4 runners were 30 seconds faster, we would have passed two of our district teams in this meet."

The NBC girls were led by a 12th place finish from Kelsey Cash. Kayla Van Norman was the second Tiger in 33rd as the team finished seventh out of eight complete teams.

Sophomores lead way at Schuyler

Sophomores Jesse Lacey and Kelsey Cash were the top NBC runners for their respective teams at the season-opening Schuyler Invite Sept. 4. After leading the race halfway through, Lacey finished fourth in the boys race. Senior Kyle Greenwood drew the praise of coach Dan Watts after cutting 4.5 minutes off his time from the 2007 Schuyler Invite. He also ran a personal best by two minutes to place 15th. Kyle Krula and Eric Kloke gave NBC three sophomores in its top four runners, placing 17th and 19th. The boys team placed third in the five-team field, just seven points from second.

In her first cross country race Cash brought home a seventh place medal for the Tigers. Fellow sopohomore Shelby Peitzmeier ran second for NBC and 19th overall. The Tiger girls finished fifth in the meet.
