Robin Schweitzer has a office full of supplies and resources to help students with difficulties or just to talk to them. She is in her second year as psychologist at the North Bend schools.

Problems real to students need validation

Robin Schweitzer is in her second year as the North Bend Central school psychologist. And she is impressed with the rapport between teachers and students.

“I like how in North Bend they really wrap the services around the students’ needs,” Schweitzer said. “They just really try their hardest to see that every student is getting what they need.”

Schweitzer graduated from Niobrara High School. She did her undergraduate work at University of Nebraska at Kearney, majoring in psychology and has a minor in communication disorders. She also has her masters in educational specialist in school psychology.

Schweitzer had 14 years experience in Iowa and North Platte. Wanting to get closer to family and the VA facilities her husband uses, she was looking for a job in eastern Nebraska. What brought her to NBC?

“When doing interviews, I just looked around and saw how they have high expectations here, which is great,” she said, “but at the same time they provide such great support for the students.”

In fall 2018 she and husband Adam moved to Fremont since they were not able to find a home in North Bend. Adam is a medically retired veteran who stays at home with their daughter, Clara, almost 3.
In the past NBC had a contracted psychologist from ESU 2 for four days a week.

“We were very fortunate to be able to add a full time school psychologist at NBC,” elementary principal Tessie Beaver said. “In addition to her responsibilities for teaching guidance lessons and special education testing, she is available to meet with students whenever the need arises. This has been a huge benefit to both students and teachers.”

Schweitzer says does a variety of counseling.

“This year I do a lot of one-on-one counseling with students,” she said. She will arrange with the teacher to have students see her so that they are not missing core instruction. They will meet in her office, usually for 20-30 minutes, or longer if needed.

“If they have really strong emotions, I don’t want to send them back to classroom with those.”
She meets with each class once a week. They will focus on different skills, approaching it in a grade-appropriate way. For instance, with kindergartners they might talk about focus attention and listening, using words to being assertive: “If you need something be assertive and ask.” They talk about empathy, managing emotions and problem solving.
