Austrian adjusts to Ames

ExchangeOlivia Vugrin, center, of Austria has been living with Andrea and Jeff Eveland this year. The Evelands took her to see the Grand Canyon among several other American sites.

Olivia Vugrin came from Feldkirch, Austria, population 32,000, to Ames, Nebraska, which is too small to even have its population listed on a sign. She wanted to learn more about the American culture, to see if it was different from her Austrian perception. She had requested to be placed in a suburb of a big city. Two weeks before leaving home she was told she was going to Ames.

“At first I thought it was Ames, Iowa,” Olivia said. “I was ‘Oh, that’s kind of a big town.’”

When she realized it was Ames, Nebraska, she tried to Google it and “it just didn’t say anything.” She didn’t know much about Ames before arriving.
