Charlene Spicer Lewis began designing clothing when she was 16 years old and was so confident that she started a web site,

Lewis, 20, grew up east of North Bend. She was home-schooled, graduating from high school in 2012, before turning her attention to her trade full time. She now lives in Williston, N.D., with husband J.T. Lewis.

When a fashion designer for a movie was looking for a modern twist of historical styles, she came across Lewis’ web site and contacted her.

“I do a lot of costumes between historical and modern,” Lewis said. “She was looking for a specific style and found it on my web site.”

The movie, Avengers Grimm, is an imagining of the world where fairy tales and the modern day collide. Lewis said she made the cape for the main character, Red, and a long leather jacket for Rapunzel. Both can be seen in the trailer for the movie. The movie is set to be released some time in March. Lewis sent some other period-appropriate items but doesn’t
know if they made it in the movie or not.

Lewis said most of her sales are to everyday people and some smaller theaters. Halloween and conventions or historical gatherings also draw customers to her site.

“I gave (the movie producer) a large discount because she was going to put my names in the credits,” Lewis said.

Even with her move to North Dakota, Lewis’ career has taken off.

“I never dreamed I would get this far this quickly,” Lewis said.

Her ultimate goal is to design and create costumes for a big-screen production.

“I am really excited about this,” Lewis said. “There is a chance I will be able to work with designers in Los Angeles this year.”
