The Limbach family may have moved away from North Bend, but they remain in the hearts and minds of their North Bend family and friends.

Spencer and his older brother Shane were both diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at young age. They were both active in high school, Shane graduating from North Bend Central High School in 2003 and Spencer in 2007. Both of the boys went to Lincoln while their parents, Rick and Cheryl, moved to Valley for their jobs.

But the cystic fibrosis hung around... and got worse.

In August 2013 Shane, 29, received a double lung transplant.

Spencer LimbachSpencer Limbach and fiance Meghan Merriman are able to plan for the future after his double lung transplant in May.

For Spencer, 25, the cystic fibrosis got progressively worse to the point that the last three to four years he was pretty much home bound, on oxygen continuously and unable to exert himself very much. On May 13 of this year, Spencer received a new set of lungs at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis. He had been on the transplant list for two-and-a-half years.

He can now move about with no real restrictions. He and fiance Meghan Merriman of Fremont have set a wedding date. Life goes on.

But there are still reminders of his ordeal, the daily anti-rejection medications, the monthly check up at UMMC. Spencer does have insurance, but there are still the co-pays for the medicine, the procedure and his hospital stay, as well as the trips to Minneapolis.

Friends of the Limbachs have organized a benefit for Spencer to be held Oct. 18. First there will be golfing at 2 p.m., 9-holes including a cart, for $50 donation. For a $20 donation there will be a meal at 5 p.m. at the North Bend auditorium and watching the Husker against Northwestern football game on a huge screen with a dance and live auction to follow (this is also included in the $50 donation package).

Reservations for the golf starts should be by Oct. 11 to Mike Limbach (402-504-0535 or MikeL@wickstrucks.com).

Both Spencer and Shane live in Lincoln and are doing well. Spencer earnd a degree in economics from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011. He is presently working as an sportswriter for NBC (the television network) sports.

Another important part of the benefit will be the information of cystic fibrosis and organ and tissue donation.

“I’m extremely grateful for everyone who put this event together,” Spencer said. “It should be a lot of fun. I hope it raises awareness for organ donation and cystic fibrosis.”

Anyone unable to attend the event but would like to make a donation can do so by mailing a check to Team Limbach, Platte Valley Bank, P.O. Box 500, North Bend, NE 68649.
