Benders sweep county spelling bee

Ella Endorf captured the Dodge County Spelling Bee championship for the second year in a row on Feb. 22. Her repeat title was anything but easy as Luther Gutekunst challenged her through 16 rounds of oral spelling competition.

It took two 10-word rounds of written competition to narrow the field to three spellers: Endorf, Gutekunst and Caitlyn Wiebold, all NBC students. Wiebold hung on through two rounds of oral spelling and then it became a spelling duel lasting 14 more rounds.

Endorf is an eighth grader at North Bend Central and Luther is a fifth grader at North Bend Elementary. Endorf will compete with nearly 90 other spellers from Nebraska and western Iowa at the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha on March 15.

Five other NBCPS students also competed, including Sami McDonald, Jenna Byrd, Austin Endorf, Cameron Frank and Elsa Rasmussen.

The Dodge County Spelling Bee is hosted by the Fremont Noon Optimists.
