Leora Johnson needed to make a change after running RJ’s Sports Bar and Grill for a year and half.

Brothers Sheldon and Mace Curry were looking for a change, too. They visited RJ’s on North Bend’s Main Street a few weekends ago and heard that the establishment was for sale. The Fremont natives talked it over and decided to take the plunge.

“The price seemed right and we liked the set up, so we jumped into it,” Sheldon said.

Sheldon, 39, was in the flooring business and was thinking about opening up a store. Instead, he is going in to the grill and bar business.

Mace, 40, lives in Omaha and was the manager of a wholesale supply company. He has quit his job to concentrate on learning the ropes of running a restaurant.
They have rented a house in North Bend, which Mace plans to eventually move into permanently. Sheldon and his family will continue living in Fremont for now.

Johnson said she will stay to help with the transition until the Currys get a liquor license. She plans to move to Florida where two of her children live.

“This is a very emotional time for me,” Johnson said. “I love what I do, so this is very difficult.”

For now, the Currys don’t plan to make any changes outside of a few tweaks. The cooks are staying on, but they will need to be hiring some wait staff and bartenders in the near future.

The first thing they plan to do is to fix up the exterior. Eventually they will change the name to The Last Second Saloon Sports Bar and Grill. They plan to keep the sports bar theme.

The hours will stay the same. They will open at 11 a.m., serving a noon meal, and stay open until 2 a.m. as long as there are customers.

Monday [Feb. 3, 2013] was their first day at their new business.

“It was a real good lunch today, so we are learning the system,” Sheldon said. “It was great to have Leora here.”
