The NBC school board got a glimpse of the future at its November meeting.
Bob Soukup of Carlson West Povondra Architects showed the board drawings of what the North Bend schools will look like next fall when the major construction is complete.

These drawings just show the largest additions, the high school gymnasium and elementary multipurpose room, not to downplay the new science wing that will replace the 42-year-old science area at NBC. The new science wing will be built on the east side of the high school with the old science classrooms being renovated to create room for a new middle school being created in the high school building.

The middle school, for grades six, seven and eight, will open up classrooms at the elementary school to accommodate the larger class sizes being experienced at North Bend Elementary. The multipurpose room at NBE will be used for PE classes, recess and room for preschoolers to get their mandated half-hour of exercise during inclement weather.

Another change not seen in the drawings will be the change in the front office, as well as other renovations to increase security for the building.

“Each passing day is one step closer to completion of this project,” NBC superintendent Dan Endorf said. “Our students and staff can’t wait to access our beautiful new facilities provided to us by our patrons.”

With a 19 percent increase in students — including the addition of the preschool — in North Bend Central Public Schools during the past four years, some changes needed to be made.

The new additions to the elementary and high school buildings have begun as a result of passage of the $7.365 million bond issue in March, which was approved by 78 percent of the voters.

Workers started pouring footings for the new additions on Monday [Nov. 25, 2013].
