June has arrived and in North Bend that means Old Settlers is just around the corner. This year the annual celebration is June 21-23. The full schedule of events, which is now being finalized, will be posted at when it is complete and published in next week’s Eagle. In the meantime, you’re probably wondering what you could be doing right now to prepare for the big weekend. We’re here for you, man. Here are some things that you can be doing in advance to achieve maximum levels of Old Settlers enjoyment:

Get ready to run: The Platte Valley Bank Old Settlers 5k and 1 mile run/walk will once again be held at NBC Saturday morning. Registration is $16 before June 14 and $22 after. More information and a registration form can be found at the bank’s web site at

Print those pictures: The first Pride of the Platte Photography Exhibit was a hit last year, and the North Bend Eagle and Alex Legge Photography are teaming up to sponsor the event again this year. Anyone can submit photos that they took to be displayed in the exhibit. While photos of any size can be submitted framed or unframed, organizers suggest making prints 8-by-10 or larger for viewing ease. The public will get a chance to vote for their favorite pictures, with awards being handed out in the following categories: People/portraits, landscapes, rural life, sports/action, nature, and miscellaneous. Special awards will be given to the favorite overall picture, the cutest picture, and to the favorite pictures taken by photographers age 14 or younger. Pictures can be submitted at the Eagle office or at the display the Friday night of Old Settlers. Unframed photos should be mounted on a white piece of paper. See for more details.

Buy those tickets! Tickets to the D.C. Lynch carnival rides will be available later this week at a discount price at Ron’s Pharmacy, the Mini-Mart, Shawsky’s, Casey’s and Platte Valley Bank.

Plan those costumes and floats: The Old Settlers Parade, sponsored by Birchwood Manor, will again be the highlight of Sunday’s activities. Groups that want to participate in the parade will line up in the NBC parking lot Sunday at noon. The North Bend Eagle will sponsor a kiddie parade for the kids up to fourth grades Saturday at 3:30. See for divisions and more information.

Wax that car so it looks nice and shiny for the Old Settlers Auto Show Saturday morning, sponsored by Jay’s Tire. Register your ride starting at 9 a.m.
Work the kinks out of your swing to get ready for the alumni golf tournament sponsored by the NBC Booster Club. Call the North Bend Golf Course to sign up.

Pray for good weather because nothing ruins an Old Settlers weekend like storms and rain.
