The North Bend Central Public Schools Board of Education met Dec. 9 in the high school library. The meeting started of the usual way, hearing Bob Soukup of Carlson West Povondra Architects give an update on the progress of the construction on the schools. Later in the meeting the board took the action of hiring Rick Hobza as the owner’s representative for the construction project.

“Rick has already been heavily involved,” superintendent Dan Endorf said. “We can now formally hire him.”

Soukup showed drawings of what the locker areas will look like after being gutted completely and renovated.

The board reviewed the two options for the 2014-2015 school calendar. Both options started later, August 26 for the students’ first day, with the only difference the amount of time the students have off at Christmas. It was decided to accept the option where students are off Dec. 22 through Jan. 2, 2015. The late start is to allow more time for construction to be completed. Graduation will be May 17 with the rest of the students finishing May 28, 2015.

The board looked at the option enrollment numbers, with 115 students optioning into NBCPS and 25 optioning out. This has resulted in state aide rising from $37,176.85 in 2006-07 to $766,333.00 this school year.

The board approved setting the capacity for the 2014-2015 school year to 45 students (same as this year) in kindergarten through grade six and 60 (up from 55 this year) in grades seven through 12.

Members of the leadership team made several suggestions on school staffing to handle the increased number of students in NBC. It was approved to hire a one-fifth-time speech language pathologist for the 0-3 program. This person has already been contracted through the Clarkson school system. Clarkson has a newly hired speech language pathologist who will come to North Bend one day a week.

In other business the board:
• Approved the midterm graduation of Austin McGee. He has plans to join the Navy.
• Approved seed money for the possible revival of the Future Business Leaders of America organization.
• Hired Judy Kleopfer as a part-time paraprofessional at NBE.
• Approved board policy 3410 pertaining to school visitors
The next meeting will be Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.
