Post office making changes

Those used to driving through the post office just before 3:45 will have to scurry a little more starting April 25. The time for picking up mail from blue collection box outside the North Bend post office will be 3 p.m., at Morse Bluff the pickup time is moving up an hour to 2:55 p.m.

“Due to the Postal Service’s dire financial situation and the rapid decline in First-Class Mail, the USPS is realigning its operational networks to gain efficiencies and help return the organization to financial stability,” regional USPS spokesman Brian Sperry said.

Where the North Bend and Morse Bluff mail used to go to Norfolk, it will start going to Omaha May 4 according to a spokesman for the postal service in Omaha. Making a change in the transportation route and the change in times the mail will be picked up, is necessary “to ensure we continue to meet our service standards,” Sperry said.

As of right now, the window hours at each post office will remain the same with North Bend open 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday - Friday and 9 - 10 a.m. on Saturdays. The Morse Bluff window is open 8 a.m. - 4:30 weekdays and 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

“We don’t anticipate any changes in delivery times,” Sperry said. “First-class mail in the Norfolk area, including ZIP Codes starting with 686 and 687, will continue to be delivered overnight, and delivery and retail operations will not be affected.”

Another change noticeable at the North Bend office is the new handicap accessible counter. Postmaster Sherry Carmichael said the doors have also been fixed to close more slowly. Both of these changes were to assist those in wheelchairs.
