Thanks to a donation from North Bend VFW Post 8223, North Bend Elementary students will be getting a new learning tool to put to use.

NBE teachers Bev Grueber and Becky Streff accepted a $500 donation from the VFW Friday.

What the money will be used for has yet to be decided, but Streff and Grueber had some ideas.

“We’ll do something that everyone can use that’s going to last,” Grueber said. “I’m excited.”

Grueber, who teaches fourth grade, said she has some money in a science account she may combine with the VFW donation to buy an Elmo projector. This is a device which uses a camera to capture an image then project it onto the wall. It is similar to the overhead projectors teachers have used for years except it does not require the projected material to be printed on a transparent page. An Elmo projector could be used to project a book page so everyone in the classroom could read along, or allow students to see an object up close without leaving their seats.

“The students will be able to benefit from this for many years to come,” said Streff, a fifth and sixth grade teacher.

VFW commander Jerry Halladay said with his wife being a former teacher, he knows how much out-of-pocket money teacher spend on their classrooms. He said the VFW hoped to relieve some of that financial stress with its donation.

VFW quartermaster Kevin Claussen said the veterans’ group was looking for a way to help out the elementary teachers and students specifically.

“We’ve always donated to post prom, and Close-Up and different things up at the high school, plus we’ve got scholarships up there,” Claussen said. “We’ve never done anything here for the elementary, so at our last meeting we decided to do something big. That’s how we came up with the idea of donating $500.”

An e-mail was sent out to the NBE teachers and Grueber and Streff responded.
The two teachers thanked the veterans and said they would let them know how the money was used once they decided for sure.
