The North Bend Central 2011 MathCounts team qualified for state competition by placing second in the Northeastern Nebraska regional competition at Central Community College in Columbus on Feb. 5.

The team of Nick Rasmussen, Katy Muller, Dylan Emanuel, and Jack Post qualified the North Bend team for state for the fourth straight year by placing second in the regional competition behind the Columbus Middle School team. Also competing on the North Bend team as alternates were Samantha Dirkschneider, Molly Glodowski, and Jake Wietfeld.

Rasmussen placed sixth in the individual competition, which qualified him for the Countdown round. In the Countdown round students go one-on-one with 45 seconds to answer questions without the aid of a calculator. Nick made the quarterfinals of the countdown round and won the third-place medal.

“I am incredibly proud of the work these students have done,” MathCounts coach Teri Jelinek said. “They continue to represent their school and community very well.”

The contest was organized by the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers to recognize achievement in mathematical skills among middle school students.

Approximately 97 students from 14 schools participated in the competition testing them on such topics as probability, statistics, linear algebra and polynomials. The program consisted of individual, team and fast-paced written tests.

Other schools placing in the competition were: third place, Boone Central Middle School; fourth place, South Sioux City Middle School; fifth place, Verdigre Middle School; and sixth place, Columbus Lakeview.

MathCounts is a program that Jelinek has offered NBC junior high students since 1989. The team members have been practicing three mornings each week since November. State competition will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on March 19.
