Gary Vyhlidal of rural Prague has filed as a write-in candidate for the NBC board. His son Eric graduated from NBC in 2002, and he has two sons currently attending NBC: Broc, a junior, and Adam, a freshman.

What prompted you to run for school board?
Being able to be a part of the board of education would allow me to work with parents and students by trying to help them address concerns and issues that they may have. Having two sons in the school system now, I just wanted to get more involved. Sometimes, being on the school board came be a challenge, which makes it rewarding.

What makes you a qualified candidate for school board?
I have been on the Prague school board for the past five-plus years, before its consolidation in May of this year. This shows that I am a qualified candidate for the school board, along with having the experience with working on the yearly budget, making sure the money is used wisely, and also the experience with working with and helping the staff so all students get a strong education, which is the most important thing.

What challenges do you see NBC facing in the near future, and how do you propose dealing with them?
The biggest challenge I see that NBCPS is facing in the very near future is the growing enrollment in the district, which is a very good problem to have. As a board, we will have to address faculty space, staffing and busing for our students.
Anything else you’d like to say to voters?
I was also a graduate from this school. I think NBC is a great and growing school system, and the issues and concerns that are being addressed and that have been addressed throughout all these years show that North Bend and the surrounding area are very proud of their school and what it represents as a strong and growing community.
