Seventy years after their graduation from North Bend High School, seven members of the class of 1939 are looking forward to getting together once again this Old Settlers.

Organized by Helen (Sorenson) Brandt Stuehmer of Fremont and Dale Nelsen in Texas, the 87-year olds will gather June 27 to catch up and relive memories. Other locals in the class are Norma Hamilton and Delma Janssen.

Ready for 70-year reunion
Classmates Willard Scott, Helen Stuehmer and Francis Minarick look at old pictures. This trio and four others will be marking 70 years since graduation during Old Settlers.

They were the first class to hold their graduation in the new city auditorium, which had been dedicated the month before. The class motto was “Before us lies the timber, let us build.” They were children of the depression; four months after their graduation, World War II started in Europe. Still, they were young and had the world at their feet.

“We got out of high school and thought we knew everything,” Francis Minarick said.

Stuehmer lived in town, behind her father’s shoe shop on Main Street. Minarick and Scott lived on family farms in the country. Minarick would spend the week at Mrs. Faist’s boarding house, as did another classmate.

Scott would drive in every day with his cousin and classmate, Paul Hamilton. The Faist house had one of the first radios in town and classmates would gather for “Inner Sanctum” and “Lights Out” radio shows. They described their class as close in high school.

Of the 33 graduates, 19 are deceased, six are unable to attend because of health and one they could not locate. But the seven members of the class of ‘39 will be having a great time. They will gather at a local restaurant Saturday night and go together to church on Sunday.

Their advice to those having their five-year reunion: Keep having them.
