
Watson, Sic announce retirementby Nathan Arneal
Long-time North Bend teachers Nancy Sic and Rick Watson informed the NBC school board at its Jan. 13 meeting that they will be retiring at the completion of the 2008-2009 school year. Sic has taught in North Bend schools for 34 years, serving the last nine as music instructor at NBC high school and elementary schools. Watson is a P.E. teacher and also serves as as NBC's activities director and head football coach. Watson has been teaching at NBC since 1977 and has served on the football staff the entire time. He served as the program's head coach for a total of 15 seasons over two different stints, first from 1977 to 1984 and again from 2002 to 2008. He compiled a record of 45-85-1 as head football coach at North Bend. Watson also serves as an assistant boys track coach, where he found great success coaching the pole vault. He has sent 55 pole vaulters to the state track meet during his 32 years coaching the vault and has seen his athletes win 22 conference championships, nine state medals and two state championships. In other board business: • Mike Borer was inducted onto the board. The board also elected the following officers: Dan Mensik, president; Dan Wesely, vice president; Jeff Bauer, secretary, and Jim Dake, treasurer. Mensik then made the following committee appointments: • The board approved a proposal to update the lighting on the stage. The approximate cost is $6,000, but $2,850 of that will be paid for by a grant provided by the Sesquicentennial Committee. • The board approved a purchase of a defibrillator for the elementary school. $500 of the $1,300 cost will be paid by Union Pacific. • Fees for the summer driver's education course were approved. NBCPS students will pay $130 and non-resident students will be charged $200. • The East Husker Conference Executive Committee is considering a proposal to raise adult admission to five dollars for all conference activities. The NBC board expressed its desire to retain the current four-dollar admission price, but said it would abide by the EHC's decision. <<Back to the archives |
