Methodists Celebrating 150 years

First United Methodist Church, 8th and Willow streets, will celebrate its 150th anniversary at the 10:30 a.m. service on Sept. 28. Bishop Ann B. Sherer, the spiritual leader of the United Methodist Church in Nebraska, will speak at the service. Sherer has served the as Nebraska bishop since 2004. A native of North Carolina, she now resides in Lincoln. She is current president of the UMC’s General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns.

Other participants include District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Harold Backus and current pastor Rev. Fred W. Andersen. Returning pastors joining the celebration include Rev. Greg Hall, Rev. Gary Main, Rev. Charles Mitchell, and Rev. Janis Soule. Family members of deceased pastors of Rev. Anderson Kwankin and Rev. Audrey Scott will also be present.

Special music will include an alumni choir under the direction of Rev. Gary Main. A Music Ministry from the Children will be presented by Elizabeth and Katrina Watts. The service will include special trumpet music by Renee Campbell and Carol Clement. A mother/daughter duet will be performed by Vernelle Werblow and Bev Thomsen. Church members will be recognized with 25, 50, and 75 year membership pins in the morning worship service.

The church will celebrate a Service of Memories at 1:30 p.m. This service will include a time for former pastors and their families to share memories about the North Bend congregation.

A reception with refreshments will follow the afternoon service.

The public is cordially invited.
